Legislation restricting the sale and supply of gonadotrophin-releasing hormone analogues further extended

Regulations restricting the prescribing and supply of puberty-supressing hormones – which were due to expire – have been extended until the end of the year.

The Government has made The Medicines (Gonadotrophin-Releasing Hormone Analogues) (Emergency Prohibition) (Extension) (No. 2) Order 2024, which has the effect of extending the ban until 31 December 2024.

The Secretary of State has expressed the intention to make the ban permanent, but can only do this by following a procedure set out in the Medicines Act 1968, including a formal consultation. The formal consultation has now ended and the extension to the ban will allow the Government time to consider the next steps using the responses to the consultation.

These regulations were first introduced in May 2024 and were previously extended in August.
