Looking to the future: Pharmacy events programme

By Chief Executive Janet Morrison

Almost twenty years ago, PSNC (as it was then) set off around the country to talk to pharmacy owners about what the new Community Pharmacy Contractual Framework meant for them. The sector was looking forward to a future in which they would be able to offer more clinical services to help support the health and wellbeing of their local communities.

Fast forward to 2024, and this summer the team from a new and improved Community Pharmacy England were back on the road to discuss what now lies ahead for the sector with a new Government in place.

Much has changed since 2005: not only for pharmacies, who now offer a range of clinical services and have worked through a global pandemic, but who are also battling unprecedented and existential challenges; but also an overhaul of how our organisation works.

Preparations for both the end of the five-year CPCF deal and a new Government have been underway for some time, as can be seen in Community Pharmacy England’s Strategy for the year. And so, whilst 2024/25 CPCF negotiations have yet to conclude, it was important to take time in July to discuss this work building for the sector’s future directly with pharmacy owners.

Touring the country and talking to LPCs and pharmacy owners was incredibly valuable, hearing a range of thoughts and experiences first-hand. Many of you have been positive about the experience too. We wanted to give you more insight into our workplans and the direction of travel. Describing the work we’ve been doing to fight your corner and to influence and engage with the new Government. If you weren’t able to join us at an event in July, please do watch the recording of our presentation.

These events form part of a much wider set of important changes at Community Pharmacy England to improve governance, strengthen our negotiating capacity, and listen to pharmacy owners’ views better. Whether through our recent events, regular polling (which has helped us to secure national media coverage) or post-Committee updates, I hope you have noticed a difference in our approach over the past year or so. We will continue to do more to better engage with you, and what better way to do that than by attending one of the biggest conferences in the pharmacy calendar, the Pharmacy Show?

This year we are doing more at the Show than ever before, from a keynote speech on the future of the CPCF through panels on influencing Government and Pharmacy First learnings, to running funding and regulatory masterclasses (full details below). The whole team will be there across both days, so please do come armed with your questions and comments for us. Oh, and there’s also our stand, #J68, where you can come to discuss any of our work in more detail.

All good reasons to book your free place at the Pharmacy Show today. I hope many of you will be able to join us.
