Medicine Supply Notification: Lantus® Solostar® (insulin glargine) 100units/ml solution for injection 3ml pre-filled pens – Updated

Update (25/01/2024):

Please be aware DHSC have been informed by Sanofi that the supply issues affecting Lantus® Solostar® (insulin glargine) 100units/ml solution for injection 3ml pre-filled pens have been resolved. There is no longer expected to be limited supply as communicated in MSN/2024/008. Prescribers should continue to prescribe Lantus ® Solostar® (insulin glargine) 100units/ml solution for injection 3ml pre-filled pens as usual.


Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC) has issued a medicine supply notification for: Lantus® Solostar® (insulin glargine) 100units/ml solution for injection 3ml pre-filled pens.

Tier 2 – medium impact

Date of issue: 23rd January 2024

  • Lantus® (insulin glargine) Solostar® 100units/ml solution for injection 3ml pre-filled pens will be in limited supply from the end of January 2024 – resupply dates are to be confirmed.
  • Abasaglar® (insulin glargine) KwikPen® 100units/ml solution for injection 3ml pre-filled pens remain available and can support increased demand.
  • Lantus® (insulin glargine) 100units/ml solution for injection 10ml vials and 3ml cartridges remain available but cannot support uplifts in demand.

Pharmacy teams dispensing Abasaglar® KwikPen should counsel patients on how to use the new pen and provide them with/signpost to instructions for use, as well as reiterating the need for closer monitoring of blood glucose initially.

A copy of this medicine supply notification, including further information, has been sent to all pharmacy NHS email addresses.

DHSC and NHSE/I have now launched an online Medicines Supply Tool, which provides up to date information about medicine supply issues. The contents of these MSNs can now be viewed on the Tool.

The Tool also details any changes to resupply dates and updates to the entries.
