The Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC) has issued a medicine supply notification for the following products:

  • Levemir® (insulin detemir) FlexPen® 100units/ml solution for injection 3ml pre-filled pens
  • Levemir® Penfill® 100units/ml solution for injection 3ml cartridges

Tier 2 – medium impact

Date of issue: 16/06/2025 (updated 14/08/2025)

  • Levemir® (insulin detemir) FlexPen® 100units/ml solution for injection 3ml pre-filled pens and Levemir® Penfill® 100units/ml solution for injection 3ml cartridges are being discontinued; stock is anticipated to be exhausted by the end of 2026.
  • Clinical guidance has been produced by clinical experts (see Supporting information).
  • Current supply positions and ability of alternative insulins to support an increase in demand is summarised in the supporting information published on the SPS Medicines Supply Tool
  • Any changes to availability will be communicated via the SPS Medicines Supply Tool.

A copy of this medicine supply notification, including actions required and supporting information, has been sent to all pharmacy NHS email addresses.

DHSC and NHSE/I have now launched an online Medicines Supply Tool, which provides up to date information about medicine supply issues. The contents of these MSNs can now be viewed on the Tool.

The Tool also details any changes to resupply dates and updates to the entries.
