The future of pharmacy services

A summary for commissioners and local councillors

The NHS Long Term Plan (published January 2019) sets out the Government’s priorities for healthcare over the next ten years and showing how the NHS funding settlement will be used. NHS England subsequently implemented a number of changes to the GP Contract to drive forward some of these commitments.

Both documents make clear that the Government and the NHS want to better utilise the skills and reach of community pharmacy to meet their ambitions, however, this will require the sector to embrace a series of changes which it must start planning for now.

Community Pharmacy England, as the community pharmacy negotiator, has developed a video animation explaining how community pharmacies will fit into the NHS of the future. The video showcases the work that pharmacies already do, as well as describing the transformation that community pharmacies will need to undertake over the coming months and years.

The video may be of interest to anyone working within or using local healthcare services, but it will be particularly relevant to commissioners or others who would like to understand what the pharmacy sector is likely to have to offer in the future.
