Our response to draft supervision legislation

The Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC) has released new proposals and draft legislation to improve access to pharmacy services as part of its 10-Year Health Plan. These changes are being proposed to give pharmacists more time to care for patients.

Gordon Hockey, Director, Legal at Community Pharmacy England, said:

“We welcome the draft legislation from the Department of Health and Social Care to modernise pharmacy supervision rules and give pharmacists more time to treat patients. Expanding the roles of qualified pharmacy staff will make it easier for patients to get the care they need and allow pharmacists to focus on key areas of frontline care.

We agree these changes should improve the extent of care patients receive in community pharmacies, help to reduce delays in accessing medicines, and improve access to pharmacy services. This is an important step towards bringing care closer to communities, as set out in the 10-Year Health Plan.

These changes are broadly what the sector has agreed, and we will now be looking closely at the details of the legislation.”
