This hub page contains links to tools and publications that LPCs may find useful when trying to spot opportunities for the commissioning and development of new community pharmacy services. As well as being useful to help pinpoint opportunities, the tools and/or publications may be useful to use as evidence to support the commissioning of community pharmacy services.

Alcohol Change UK
Alcohol Change UK – the charity behind Dry January – has published Try Dry, the guide to living alcohol-free. The site also hosts alcohol stats and interactive tools to help cut down or stop drinking, as well as specific resources for Dry January.

#Drymester is a campaign to help parents-to-be avoid alcohol during pregnancy. Resources can be found on their website.
Public Health England – Local Authority Public Health Dashboard
PHE has published a local authority (LA) public health dashboard.
The digital dashboard covers seven service areas including the best possible start in life, child obesity, drug treatment, alcohol treatment, NHS Health Checks, sexual health services and tobacco control.
The dashboard ranks each LA and provides a description based on how it compares with all other LAs with a similar deprivation index for each service area.
PHE has also published a blog on the LA public health dashboard which provides further information on the project.

PHE has also published Health Matters: Harmful drinking and alcohol dependence, which aims to make the case for investing in effective alcohol treatment.

PHE has Health Profiles available to view on their website.
Health Profiles are a snapshot of health and wellbeing across each LA in England as portrayed by a range of indicators such as child poverty, smoking rates, obesity levels, hospital stays and early mortality rates.
The profiles are intended to stimulate discussion between local government and health service providers by highlighting local needs and providing comparisons with other areas as well as with the national average. They will consequently be of particular interest to LPC members considering service development opportunities in their area.
Public Health England – Healthier Lives: Diabetes, Hypertension, NHS Health Check and Alcohol & Drugs
PHE has an online tool – Healthier Lives that allows the user to select an area on a map of England to view the prevalence and treatment of diabetes or hypertension, prevalence of drug or alcohol abuse, and the provision of NHS Health Checks. This information can be mapped by LA or CCG and can be compared in a table against other LAs or CCGs. A search function for individual GP practices is also available to show how they compare to other practices in their CCG.
As well as information on prevalence and treatment for diabetes and hypertension, the website also includes for diabetes, figures on care processes, for example, the percentage of patients with diabetes who have had a flu vaccination and the percentage of people who have suffered from complications as a result of their diabetes. For hypertension further information such as risk and prevention figures, for example, healthy eating and obesity percentages can be obtained.
In the NHS Health Check section, risk factors can be searched, for example, by clicking on an area on the map it shows the number of adults who smoked in 2012 and a comparison table can then be viewed to see how the area is ranked against other areas

Public Health England – Local Alcohol Profiles for England
Public Health England (PHE) regularly publishes updated Local Alcohol Profiles for England (LAPE) data.
The LAPE interactive tool presents a range of alcohol-related indicators and allows users to view and analyse data in a user-friendly format. The LAPE website also provides links to further supporting and relevant information to aid understanding of alcohol-related harm in a local population.
NHS Digital – Health Survey
Health Survey for England (HSE) – HSE is a survey which aims to monitor the health of the population. The survey highlights trends in health, estimates the proportion of people in England who have specified health conditions, and estimates the occurrence of certain risk factors and combinations of risk factors related to these conditions.
Each year the survey covers a range of health and care topics.
NHS Digital – Statistics on alcohol
Statistics on Alcohol covers topics such as drinking habits and behaviours among adults (aged 16 and over) and school children (aged 11 to 15); drinking-related ill health and mortality; affordability of alcohol; alcohol-related admissions to hospital; and alcohol-related costs.
Public Health England – Health matters: antimicrobial resistance
This document provides information on antimicrobial resistance, sets out effective methods to avoid unnecessary prescribing of antibiotics and provides advice for healthcare professionals.
Public Health England – Antibiotic awareness
Government toolkits are available for healthcare professionals to raise awareness about the dangers of antimicrobial resistance, and to promote events such as European Antibiotic Awareness Day.
European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control – antimicrobial resistance
The ECDC has developed and published infographics relating to antimicrobial resistance.
Asthma UK
Asthma UK has an asthma improvement hub on its website. On this page, there are a number of service improvement tools and best practice examples for improving the care of adults and children. There is also an option to click on a UK-wide report, as well as local data and reports on asthma care that allow the user to compare their area against others in the local region.
Cancer Research UK – Local Cancer Statistics tool
The Local Cancer Statistics tool can be used to understand and compare the latest cancer-related statistical information in a specific area across the UK including cancer incidence, survival, mortality, early diagnosis, screening and risk factors.

Public Health England – Cancer services
This tool contains data on cancer services at GP and Clinical Commissioning Group level collated by the National Cancer Registration and Analysis Service. The profiles are for commissioners and health professionals when assessing the impact of cancer on their local population and making decisions about services. They include data on cancer screening, Two Week Wait referrals, diagnostic services, emergency presentations and admissions.
Public Health England – Health matters: improving the prevention and diagnosis of bowel cancer
This resource for health professionals and local authorities focuses on how bowel cancer affects people so:
- fewer people develop bowel cancer; and
- more eligible people take part in screening.

British Heart Foundation – Tailored blood pressure packs
To improve the detection and management of high blood pressure (BP), GPs, nurses and pharmacists of the CVD Leadership Forum have worked with the British Heart Foundation and Public Health England’s National Cardiovascular Intelligence Network, Royal College of General Practitioners, Stroke Association, Blood Pressure UK and British and Irish Hypertension Society to create the Blood Pressure: How can we do better? resource.
This resource pulls together information from a number of sources to provide a summary of Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG)-level blood pressure care across the nation and recommendations on how to improve care at CCG and practice level.
National Cardiovascular Intelligence Network – Cardiovascular intelligence packs
For every CCG the cardiovascular intelligence packs give practice-level data on prevention, detection and management across a range of cardiovascular conditions – high cardiovascular (CVD) risk and hypertension, stroke and atrial fibrillation, diabetes, kidney disease, coronary heart disease and heart failure.
Each condition has two components – benchmarked data and narrative. For key indicators, the data charts show the degree of variation but also identify the numbers of individuals in each CCG who are undiagnosed or inadequately treated.

NHS England – Long term conditions information dashboard
The dashboard (flash required) supports the commissioning of care for people with long term conditions (LTCs). The dashboard has been updated with data on a number of people with multiple LTCs and the proportion of people with LTCs who smoke, emergency bed days for people over 85 and quality of life.
NHS England has also created a new Explorer view of the data in the LTC Dashboard. This allows two indicators to be compared across organisations (e.g. prevalence and outcomes) or different time periods for an indicator.

NHS England – Commissioning for Value support packs
NHS England has a number of Commissioning for Value support packs available on their website. One of the packs shows interested parties ‘where to look’ to find opportunities to improve outcomes and add value for the local population.
Another pack contains ‘pathways on a page’ provides more detail on a number of medical conditions, including diabetes, heart disease, stroke, COPD and asthma.
NHS England – Medicines optimisation dashboard
The medicines optimisation dashboard helps Clinical Commissioning Groups (CCGs) focus on how well patients across the country are being supported to use their medicines, and it may also be a useful stimulus for them to consider community pharmacy’s role in this area.
The dashboard brings together data and aligns it to various themes including patient safety, mental health, cardiovascular disease, respiratory disease, diabetes, antibiotic prescribing and community pharmacy.

House of Commons Library – Obesity statistics 2015
The House of Commons Library Briefing Paper Number 3336 Obesity Statistics gives statistics on obesity for England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland with international comparisons. Breakdowns by age, gender, local authority and deprivation are given where possible, and data for both adult and child obesity is covered. In addition to statistics on the prevalence of obesity, this briefing gives statistics on prescriptions of drugs for obesity, trends in bariatric surgery, and the detrimental effect of obesity on health.

Public Health England Obesity – Local authority (LA) adult excess weight data
Data is now available for prevalence of excess weight in adults aged 16 and over, at LA level. This data is an indicator in the Public Health Outcomes Framework Health Improvement domain. The new figures combine data from 2013, 2014 and 2015. The previous year’s figures combined three years of data from 2012, 2013 and 2014. There are also breakdowns of LA data by BMI category: underweight, healthy weight, overweight, obesity and excess weight.

This professional resource outlines how councils and partners can help small food businesses and schools create a healthier food environment and help children and families choose healthier food.
Public Health England – Physical Activity tool
This tool brings together data for the whole of England on physical activity, including walking and cycling, as well as data on related risk factors and conditions such as obesity and diabetes. The digital dashboard covers seven service areas including best possible start in life, child obesity, drug treatment, alcohol treatment, NHS Health Checks, sexual health services and tobacco control.
The dashboard ranks each LA and provides a description based on how it compares with all other LAs with a similar deprivation index for each service area.

Public Health England – Healthier Lives: Diabetes, Hypertension, NHS Health Check and Alcohol & Drugs
PHE has an online tool – Healthier Lives that allows the user to select an area on a map of England to view the prevalence and treatment of diabetes or hypertension, prevalence of drug or alcohol abuse, and the provision of NHS Health Checks. This information can be mapped by LA or CCG and can be compared in a table against other LAs or CCGs. A search function for individual GP practices is also available to show how they compare to other practices in their CCG.
As well as information on prevalence and treatment for diabetes and hypertension, the website also includes for diabetes, figures on care processes, for example, the percentage of patients with diabetes who have had a flu vaccination and the percentage of people who have suffered with complications as a result of their diabetes. For hypertension further information such as risk and prevention figures, for example, healthy eating and obesity percentages can be obtained.
In the NHS Health Check section, risk factors can be searched, for example, by clicking on an area on the map it shows the number of adults who smoked in 2012 and a comparison table can then be viewed to see how the area is ranked against other areas
In the alcohol and drugs section, prevalence of alcohol related hospital admissions can be found as well as information on the proportion of people waiting for alcohol treatment and those that have successfully completed treatment.
Public Health England – Health Profiles
PHE has Health Profiles available to view on their website.
Health Profiles are a snapshot of health and wellbeing across each LA in England as portrayed by a range of indicators such as child poverty, smoking rates, obesity levels, hospital stays and early mortality rates.
The profiles are intended to stimulate discussion between local government and health service providers by highlighting local needs and providing comparisons with other areas as well as with the national average. They will consequently be of particular interest to LPC members considering service development opportunities in their area.
