Description
Pharmacies that provide this service are expected to:
- Ensure the emergency hormonal contraceptive pill is widely advertised and promoted within waiting areas and leaflets are available for patients to read;
- Provide an information leaflet to all women requesting for the emergency hormonal contraceptive pill as part of the consent process;
- Offer user friendly, non-judgmental, patient centered and confidential services in line with the ‘You’re Welcome’ criteria;
- Provide an information leaflet on long term contraceptive options and signpost to relevant services: pharmacies, General Practice and Sexual Health Hounslow.
- Repeat encounters for emergency hormonal contraceptive pills should be documented via PharmOutcomes and referred to Sexual Health Hounslow clinics for provision of long-term contraception options.
- Signpost all women who receive emergency hormonal contraception to local sexual health services for screening for sexually transmitted infections or eServices such as Sexual Health London (SHL).
Pharmacies must ensure that all personnel involved in the delivery of the service have the relevant training. On-site training will be delivered by Sexual Health Hounslow. Staff will also be expected to attend refresher training. This will be provided annually, or more frequently if the need arises.
