Aims and objectives of service
- To improve the care of the dying in the last few days/hours of life by:
- Providers having sufficient stock of an agreed list of palliative care medicines (PCMs) during the opening hours of the pharmacy.
- Providers signposting carers to another participating pharmacy with sufficient stock, in the event that they are unable to immediately supply the necessary palliative care medicines.
- Providers requesting an alternative medicine (in the case of national shortages) for the patient or carer to avoid undue stress and time spent trying to obtain a supply of the prescribed medicine.
