Please note that this service was previously called Primary Eyecare Assessment & Referral Scheme (PEARS)
Under MECS the patient will be assessed by their optician and, if appropriate, will be issued with a “Medication Request form”. Community Pharmacies, participating in the Barnsley PharmacyFirst Minor Ailments Scheme may supply the medication and claim reimbursement via PharmOutcomes.
The optometrist undertaking the assessment will assume clinical responsibility for the patient’s treatment and will determine the appropriate quantity to be supplied from the following limited formulary:
- Chloramphenicol 0.5% eye drops 10ml
- Chloramphenicol 1% eye ointment 4g
- Opticrom (Sodium Cromoglicate) 2% eye drops 10ml
- Hypromellose 0.3% eye drops 10ml
- Carbomer 980 liquid gel eye drops 0.2% 10g
