Description
The service will be managed by Pharmacy Services Partnership Ltd (PSP) under a subcontract from the WDP, Lead provider of Healthy Behaviours Contract.
Pharmacists will provide a range of support and intervention services to clients wishing to quit smoking. These include, but may not be limited to:
- Delivery of an initial pre-quit assessment and an assessment of the clients readiness to quit;
- The Stop Smoking Advisor will provide information about the pharmacological medicines that will be available to support the client. Pharmacies shall not present any specific medication more favourably than another;
- Provision of face-to-face support to clients on a weekly basis (if they wish) for a total of six sessions including the initial assessment. This support shall be provided in accordance with the established Department of Health guidelines and NCSCT guidelines. Where face-to-face support is declined or impractical for any reasons, the Pharmacy shall endeavour to provide alternative forms of contact via text, email or phone as may be practical; and
- Establishment with the individual a planned date for quitting and co-operation to achieve CO readings at every visit and as a minimum at the 4 week point.
Pharmacists may additionally supply Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT) and Varenicline (Champix) under Patient Group Direction (PGD) for up to twelve weeks, as need determines.

Training
Pharmacists and nominated staff members shall have Level II Stop Smoking Training prior to commencement of service. Individual Named Pharmacists and nominated staff may be assessed by PSP prior to or during any period of contract term. Pharmacists supplying varenicline must passed a relevant Varenicline PGD assessment. The PGD training will be provided by PSP All advisors must have completed the NCSCT online assessment (The National Centre for Smoking Cessation and Training).
All trained staff must attend at least one Refresher training session per year. Failure to do so will be considered a breach of the contract.
