Description
The providing pharmacy will dispense stop smoking pharmacotherapy to:
- All clients who produce a voucher demonstrating their choice of pharmacotherapy
has been arrived at through discussion with the approved provider of stop
smoking behavioural support. Where a voucher is presented it will have been signed by the Stop Smoking Practitioner (SSP), providing behavioural support, and will provide information on the preferred pharmacotherapy option agreed between the client and the SSP.
The pharmacy will then operate at one of two levels:
- Level 1: Where an NRT option is appropriate. Provide stop smoking medicines directly to patients/clients with reference to the locally agreed guidance (Appendix 1).
- Level 2: Where prescription only medicines (POMs) options are appropriate
Dispense varenicline with reference to the agreed Patient Group Direction (Appendix
2) or signpost the patient/clients to their GP for consideration of varenicline or
bupropion, where the pharmacist decides a medical opinion is required.

Training
The Healthy Lifestyle Trainer Service will provide overall support and advice regarding
delivery of integrated stop smoking services and will be responsible for identifying and
organising training for pharmacotherapy providers.
