Description
The Stop Smoking Service in community pharmacies is delivered by a range of personnel in pharmacies and follows a short pathway, which starts with brief advice, that all practice personnel can deliver and then referral on for treatment and support from a practice stop smoking advisor.
The Stop Smoking Service will promote and support the treatment of smokers who want to stop smoking, using evidence based interventions. The service in community pharmacies will be provided by staff who are trained and accredited as stop smoking advisors.
Stop smoking interventions will be provided for up to 12 weeks and available to anyone aged 12 and over who reside or work in North Tyneside. The interventions delivered by the stop smoking advisors include motivational interviewing and cognitive behavioural therapy.

Training
Anyone wishing to become a Stop Smoking Advisor is required to complete the accredited Stop Smoking Service Advisor training provided by North Tyneside Council’s Stop Smoking Management Service and meet the national competencies for Stop Smoking Advisors (as set out by the NHS Centre for Smoking Cessation and Training).
In addition all Stop Smoking Advisors are required to meet update requirements, attendance at an annual refresher session, and other updates as required.
