Aim of the Service
2.1 The aim of the service is to provide the supervised consumption of Methadone/ Buprenorphine within community pharmacies for Enfield Drug and Alcohol Service clients.
2.2 The service has the following main targets:
- To reduce the client’s need to use illegal substances
- To monitor closely stabilisation onto Methadone/Buprenorphine program
- To offer the above in a way that supports success by being local, confidential and efficient.
- To reduce the leakage of prescribed Methadone/Buprenorphine

Training
- Pharmacists participating in this scheme are expected to attend annual training organised by Enfield Drug and Alcohol Service and also to have completed the relevant CPPE (Centre for Pharmacy Postgraduate Education) course on substances misuse. See cppe.ac.uk for Substance Misuse modules.
- To support continuous learning and development, pharmacists participating in this scheme will be required to attend appropriate training event organised by Enfield Drug and Alcohol Service. A minimum of one evening per year will be offered by ENFIELD DRUG AND ALCOHOL SERVICE. It is desirable that key members of pharmacy staff are also appropriately trained. It is the pharmacist’s responsibility to recommend and put forward relevant staff member(s) for training.
- Training topics will include:
- Needle Exchange & Harm Reduction
- Overdose Awareness & Prevention
- Basic Drug Awareness
- Policy and protocols
- Practical aspects of the scheme (SLA/Monitoring and Recording/Evaluation of the Scheme)
- Professional and practical boundaries
- Dealing with difficult clients
