Vision Project: Membership

Nuffield Trust and The King’s Fund worked very closely with the community pharmacy sector throughout the Vision project. Pharmacy input into the project across the Steering Group, Advisory Panel and working groups. In addition to these groups, pharmacy owners and teams, LPCs and all others in the sector were also invited to take part in two consultation exercises.

Steering Group

The Steering Group provided ‘challenge and review’ at key stages in the project, as well acting as a sounding board and advising on the content and structure of the report. The group was made up largely of pharmacy representatives, including both pharmacy owner and LPC representation, to ensure that the sector’s views remained at the heart of this work.

Advisory Panel

The Advisory Panel was formed of representatives from community pharmacy and a wider range of organisations outside pharmacy. The panel included membership from patient groups, other healthcare professions, the Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC), the NHS, and local commissioners, ensuring that the voices of community pharmacy’s most critical stakeholders were heard as the vision was developed.

Community Pharmacy England Working Groups

Community Pharmacy England organised four working groups which focussed on specific topics, allowing more detailed discussions on these to inform the development of the vision.

The working groups were chaired by Community Pharmacy England, who also provided secretariat support. Nuffield Trust and The King’s Fund attended all meetings to support the discussions and provide updates on the project’s lines of inquiry that related to the working group.

Working group on Funding

Role: To support the project team in the development of the vision through:

• Providing early thoughts on the future funding options for community pharmacy;
• Identifying strategic options and priorities for consideration by the project team; and
• Reviewing and providing comments on the draft vision document.

Membership

Working group on Digital and Technology

Role: To support the project team in the development of the vision through:

• Providing early thoughts on the future IT development options for community pharmacy to support the delivery of pharmacy services and communications with patients and other healthcare professionals;
• Providing early thoughts on the future options for use of technology in community pharmacy (e.g. robotics, hub and spoke dispensing) to support the delivery of pharmacy services;
• Identifying strategic options and priorities for consideration by the project team; and
• Reviewing and providing comments on the draft vision document.

Working group on Services

Role: To support the project team in the development of the vision through:

• Providing early thoughts on the future service development options for community pharmacy;
• Identifying strategic options and priorities for consideration by the project team in terms of prioritising the scope, roll-out and sustainability of service options; and
• Reviewing and providing comments on the draft vision document.

Membership

Working group on Workforce

Role: To support the project team in the development of the vision through:

• Providing early thoughts on the future workforce needs for community pharmacy which would allow the sector to provide the potential future vision of services to patients and the NHS, including the application of skill mix in the pharmacy, training and development needs, and blocks and enablers;
• Identifying strategic options and priorities for consideration by the project team; and
• Reviewing and providing comments on the draft vision document.
